Requirements


To be eligible for early admission to the Master’s degree program students must:

1. Have successfully completed 75 or more undergraduate credit hours and classified as a junior.

2. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 for all academic hours.

3. Have successfully completed all of the following Journalism courses:

a. (Broadcast/Digital, Print/Digital, Photo Journalism students: JOUR 2310 , JOUR 2300 , JOUR 3321  or JOUR 3323  and JOUR 3300  

b. Advertising and Public Relations students: JOUR 2000 , JOUR 2310 , JOUR 3020   /JOUR 3321 , JOUR 3040  and JOUR 3050  or JOUR 3200  and JOUR 3420   

4. Have successfully taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) before or by the end of the first semester of graduate course work.

As an undergraduate, undergraduate students with at least 75 credit hours as in the pathway program would be allowed to take six credit hours from the following list:

  • JOUR 5330 Strategic Social Media
  • JOUR 5100 Case Problems in Public Relations
  • JOUR 5150 International Mass Communications
  • JOUR 5350 (when taught as Advanced Writing for Broadcast/Web)
  • JOUR 5350 (when taught as Visual News Storytelling)

If the student is not a journalism major, then the student needs to take the following bridge classes:

  • JOUR 5010 Reporting Practice
  • JOUR 5020 Editing Practices

Upon completion of the B.A., the 12 credit hours required would be as follows:

  • JOUR 5050 Readings in Mass Communication
  • JOUR 5300 Theories of Mass Communication
  • JOUR 5250 Quantitative Research
  • JOUR 5260 Qualitative Research

As for electives, the grad student would take at least 2 of these for 6 or more credits:

  • JOUR 5270 Advanced Reporting Techniques
  • JOUR 5280 Media Management
  • JOUR 5290 Science, Health & Environmental Reporting
  • JOUR 5500 Integrated Communications
  • JOUR 5550 Magazine Production (Denton Live)
  • JOUR 5510 Internet and Interactive Communication Strategy
  • JOUR 5700 Advanced Feature Writing
  • JOUR 5710 Narrative Journalism
  • JOUR 5720 Magazine Writing & Publishing (Mayborn magazine)
  • JOUR 5730 Writing, Editing and Publishing for the Literary Market
  • JOUR 5740 Literary Journalism
  • JOUR 5800 Professional Internship
  • JOUR 5900/5910 Advanced/Special Problems (if applicable)

Take at least 2 of these for 6 or more credits:

  • JOUR 5020 Visual Journalism
  • JOUR 5120 Strategic Public relations
  • JOUR 5200 Public Opinion and Propaganda
  • JOUR 5310 Media Ethics
  • JOUR 5320 New Technologies of Mass Communication
  • JOUR 5900/5910 Advanced/Special Problems

If the student chooses to complete the M.A, then there would be a requirement of 6 credit hours for

  • JOUR 5900 Thesis
