MTSE 2000 - Stuff Matters: Materials and Civilization

Specifically designed for non-science and non-engineering students and meets University Core Curriculum requirements for Natural Sciences. Materials have defined the “age” in which we live throughout history, e.g. “Stone” age, “Bronze” age, “Iron” age, “Silicon” age. Materials breakthroughs and failures continue to shape our everyday lives. In this course, students will learn the basics of materials science: processing/structure/property/performance relationships. This course involves in-class and hands-on demonstrations, and guest lecturers. Students will examine historical and contemporary issues for materials scientists. Materials such as metals and their alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites will be discussed in context of our daily lives. Students will work in teams to address modern materials issues.
