Health Informatics, BS


The BS in Health Informatics (BSHI) program is recognized as a STEM undergraduate degree and will be offered in three modes: face-to-face, online and at Frisco. The purpose of the BSHI program is to prepare students to use and implement information and technology solutions to improve the delivery of healthcare. 

Educational objectives

Graduates will be able to:

  • Describe the framework of modern healthcare and the current major challenges facing healthcare. 
  • Identify the concepts, methods, and tools related to managing data, information, and technology in the healthcare sector. 
  • Explain the role of information systems in healthcare and major issues surrounding their use, including privacy and security.
  • Use analytic techniques and tools to improve the delivery of healthcare. 
  • Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills in the implementation of health informatics solutions. 

Hours required and general/college requirements


A minimum of 120 semester hours, 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor’s degree as specified in Degree requirements and graduation  and the requirements of this catalog: University Core Curriculum  in the Academic policies  section of this catalog.

Electives, 45 hours


Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. For specific information see an academic advisor in the College of Information.

Other requirements


Students must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 across all major courses taken.
