Kinesiology, BS (teacher certification)

A Bachelor of Science with a major in kinesiology shows that you are committed to best practices within the field of human movement and wellness. You will also graduate prepared to take the examination for all-level physical education certification. This track requires admission to the Teacher Education program.


Degree requirements

The following requirements must be satisfied for a Bachelor of Science with a major in kinesiology (teacher certification).

Hours required and general/college requirements


A minimum of 120 semester hours (127 semester hours for those seeking all-level teacher certification), of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree as specified in the “University Core Curriculum ” in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Education  requirements.

Major requirements


Capstone, 3 hours


Physical performance courses, 5 hours


Students must choose two different sport activities selected from Group 1 (A–D), select one sport activity from Group 1 (E), and select two sport activities from Group 2 (A–C). At least one activity from Group 1 or Group 2 must be at the intermediate or advanced level.

For all-level teacher certification:

Minor


Minimum of 18 hours, 6 of which must be advanced.

Electives


Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. For specific information see an academic advisor in the College of Education.

Other requirements


  • 12 hours of KINE must be taken at UNT.
  • 42 hours must be advanced, 24 of which must be taken at UNT.
  • 6 hours minimum of the minor must be advanced.

Following recommendations for courses listed in the University Core Curriculum may be necessary to avoid taking excess hours. Consult the Student Advising Office, Matthews Hall, Room 105, for details.

All kinesiology majors


A minimum grade of C is required in MATH 1680 , BIOL 2301  and BIOL 2302 . A 3.0 GPA is required in PHED 1000 , KINE 2030  and KINE 2050  prior to a kinesiology major being allowed to take any KINE 3000- or 4000-level theory core courses.

Teacher education


Admission to teacher education

  • Junior standing (minimum of 60 earned hours)
  • A 2.75 overall GPA and a 2.75 UNT GPA
  • Acceptable scores on the THEA (240 reading, 230 math, and 220 writing) or exemptions based on SAT, ACT or TAKS/TAAS scores
  • Approved online interview questionnaire (all except Art and Music)
  • An official degree audit with certification
  • A signed Application for Admission to Teacher Education

Completion

To receive final approval for teacher certification:

  • Completion of all requirements of an approved 127-hour degree plan.
  • Grades of C or better for each kinesiology and each PHED course.
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA in each of the following areas: each teaching field, all education courses, all UNT work, overall.
  • Successful completion of student teaching (see Eligibility for teacher certification requirements listed under the Department of Teacher Education and Administration in this catalog for details).
  • Successful scores on appropriate sections of the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES).

Students should visit the Student Advising Office in Matthews Hall, Room 105, for additional information regarding degree audits. Questions about student teaching and/or the TExES exam should be addressed to the TExES Advising Office in Matthews Hall, Room 103 (940-369-8601).

Students are encouraged to see their academic or faculty advisor each term/semester for help with program decisions and enrollment.

Additional information

Once admitted the student will take the following teaching courses:

The student may not receive credit for education courses until after admission to teacher education.
