Course work for the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences with a concentration in cytotechnology provides a solid background in the sciences and teaches the skills needed to work as an allied health professional who studies cells and cellular anomalies.
The Department of Biological Sciences offers a concentration in cytotechnology as an option within the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BSMLS). This concentration is available through affiliation with the following programs, which are approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP):
- Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.
- Mayo School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minn.
Students entering this concentration will be prepared to meet the requirements to enter a school of cytotechnology but will not meet the requirements to enter a school of medical laboratory sciences unless additional course work is taken. Consult with a departmental advisor for clarification.
Upon graduation with this concentration, students are eligible to take national examinations given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Upon passing the registry examination, the student is considered a certified cytotechnologist. The awarding of the degree is not contingent upon students’ passing the national board examination.

Hours required and general/college requirements
A minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the bachelor’s degree as specified in the “General University Requirements ” in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Arts and Sciences requirements. Cytotechnology concentration (minimum of 32 hours)
Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 12 months of professional training at an approved cytotechnology school as verified by an official transcript sent to the UNT cytotechnology program director. The transcript is evaluated by the director, who recommends to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Registrar that a minimum of 32 hours of credit be granted for the completed professional training. Electives
Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. - A minimum grade of C in all science and mathematics courses. Only two attempts will be allowed for each biology and biochemistry course in the degree. A minimum 2.5 grade point average for upper-division (advanced) courses in the sciences, a minimum UNT 2.5 grade point average and an overall 2.5 grade point average are required for graduation. All students seeking to enter the Department of Biological Sciences, with the exception of beginning freshmen, must meet the minimum UNT and overall grade point averages given above. Students in the department whose UNT or overall grade point averages drop below the minimum UNT and overall grade point averages given above for two consecutive semesters will be removed from the program.
- Cytotechnology students must submit to the program director a transcript evaluation request, including the name(s) of the cytotechnology school(s) where the student is applying. Students are also required to file with the program director the name of the accredited cytotechnology school to be attended.
