The English department plays a pivotal role in developing a student’s writing and critical analysis skills. While pursuing the Bachelor of Arts with a major in English, you can choose from concentrations in literature, writing and rhetoric, creative writing and language arts with secondary teacher certification.

Major requirements, 45 hours
Foundation courses, 15 hours
Note: ENGL 3000 should be taken in the first 18 hours of English course work. Two of the following courses, 6 hours
Literature concentration, 27 hours
Two courses from the following historical or genre surveys, 6 hours
One single or dual author course, 3 hours
One course each from the following six categories, 18 hours
Note: Courses that appear in more than one category may only be used to satisfy one category; a course used to satisfy a requirement listed above may not also be used to satisfy a category listed below. Critical theory, writing studies and game studies
Race, ethnicity and indigeneity
Gender, sexuality and the body
Early historical period: literature and culture from beginnings to 1800
Middle historical period: literature and culture from 1800-1950
Late historical period: literature and culture from 1950 to the present
Additional requirements, 3 hours
One additional 4000-level course from any of the above listed categories. Other course requirements

Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum requirements . Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. A minimum grade of C is required in all English courses counting toward the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a concentration in literature. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for all English courses is required for graduation. |
