The recreation, event and sport management degree is designed as a 2 + 2 program. Students earning their associate in arts or associate in science degrees from a Texas college will come with 60 semester credit hours that will be applied to their RESM BS degree.
Degree requirements
The following requirements must be satisfied for a Bachelor of Science with a major in recreation and leisure studies.

Hours required and general/college requirements
A minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree as specified in the University Core Curriculum in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Education requirements.
Recreation, event and sport management core courses, 30 hours
- RESM 1950 - Professional Foundations of Recreation, Event and Sport Professions (must be taken during the furst semester enrolled in the program)
- RESM 2150 - Leadership in Recreation, Event, and Sport Organizations
- RESM 3050 - Operations and Logistics in Recreation, Event and Sport Organizations
- RESM 3450 - Diversity and Inclusion in Recreation, Event and Sport Organizations
- RESM 4050 - Management of Recreation, Event and Sport Organizations
- RESM 4080 - Legal Aspects of Recreation, Event and Sport Organizations
- RESM 4160 - Assessment and Data Analytics in Recreation, Event, and Sport Organizations
- RESM 4180 - Planning, Designing and Maintaining Recreation, Event and Sport Facilities and Areas
- RESM 4190 - Finance and Economics in Recreation, Event and Sport Organizations
- RESM 4250 - Marketing in Sport and Recreation Industries
RESM capstone/pre-internship, 3 hours
Internship, 12 hours
- Each recreation, event and sport management student is required to complete a total of 12 credit hours of internship/on-site experience (RESM 4100 ).
- Students must complete a minimum of 480 clock hours to meet this requirement.
- The student must meet several requirements prior to enrollment in this course, including:
- Completion of RESM 4150 (capstone/pre-internship) with a C or better;
- A minimum of 2.25 overall GPA; a minimum of 2.50 GPA in all RESM courses with a C or better in each RESM course;
- Verification of 100 hours of paid or voluntary experience in at least two different recreation, sport, park or leisure service agencies within the past 48 months; and
- Departmental permission to enroll in the course.
- The internship is typically a 30 to 40-hours per week affiliation with an approved agency.
Minor requirements, 18 hours
- Student may choose a pre-defined minor from another discipline.
OR
- Students may choose an interdisciplinary minor by selecting any six courses (18 hours) from outside the RESM program.
Recreation, event and sport management electives, 15 hours
Student must choose any five courses with the RESM prefix.
The five courses from the electives requirement cannot include the RESM core, capstone and/or internship courses listed above.
Other requirements
- A minimum grade of C is required in each RESM course.
- A 2.5 overall GPA is required on all RESM courses.
- A minimum UNT GPA of 2.0 and an overall GPA of 2.0 are required for graduation. Overall GPA includes all course work transferred plus that taken at UNT.
Notes
Students are encouraged to see their academic or faculty advisor and the department degree audit advisor each term/semester for help with program decisions and enrollment.
