The graduate academic certificate in urban art education studies (UAES) is designed to provide graduate students in the visual arts and education with specialized knowledge and skills in urban art education. The certificate in UAES combines theory, practice, and inquiry in urban art education. It prepares students to understand and respond to the complex social, cultural and institutional contexts that shape art participation, curriculum, teaching, learning, partnerships, and programs in urban environments.

The UAES certificate program is intended for post-baccalaureate students who are established and aspiring professionals working at the intersections of art and education. These may include, among others, school teachers, art museum educators, community-based artists, and interdisciplinary arts and urban program directors. Those who complete the program will possess the capacities to develop, implement, and advocate for art programs that engage urban youth and communities.

Program eligibility

The Graduate Academic Certificate in Urban Art Education Studies is intended for two audiences:

  1. holders of an undergraduate or master’s degree in the visual arts (e.g., art education, art history, studio art, design), education, or other related field; or
  2. currently enrolled graduate students in the visual arts (e.g., art education, art history, studio art, design), education, or other related field at the University of North Texas.

Admission information (certificate program only)

Prospective students must be admitted to the Toulouse Graduate School, which requires a graduate school application and official transcripts from prior colleges or universities. Program faculty review all applications and determine admissions based on applicants’ qualifications and spaces available. An interview with a faculty member may be required in some instances.

Students who are awarded graduate academic certificates and later apply for admission to the Master of Arts with a major in art education and a concentration in urban art education studies will be required to submit additional materials (see Art Education, MA ).

Certificate requirements, 15 hours

The graduate academic certificate in urban art education studies requires five courses totaling 15 semester credit hours. They can be pursued independently or concurrently with the master’s degree.
