Explores the European-dominated economic system that depended upon access to and reasonably unfettered use of the sea, focusing on the development of what Europeans proclaimed to be the modern world during the Age of Sail. The maritime aspects of European exploration of the world, the development of ships and navigational technology, naval developments, general maritime economic theory, and maritime cultural history.
