HIST 4885 - History of Sports and American Society

Historical survey of the impact of sports and recreation from the colonial period to the present. Investigates the history of sporting and athletic endeavors by tracing their rise from informal folk games to a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry in the course of U.S. history. Examines the humble beginnings of these “wicked amusements” in colonial and pre-colonial America and follows them forward to the present time, including current controversies such as stadium welfare, steroids and Native American mascots.
